The American Flag That Big Tech Couldn't Cancel: The Story of Your American Flag Store
Handcrafted American Flags. Freedom of Expression. Made in America. A Family Business That Refused to Be Canceled.
There are plenty of places to buy an American flag.
But Your American Flag Store is about much more than selling flags.
We believe the American flag represents something bigger: freedom, sacrifice, courage, faith, family, and the right to proudly express what you believe.
For years, we have handcrafted some of America's most distinctive rustic wooden American flags and patriotic artwork. But our story became much bigger than wood, paint, and flags when our family business found itself at the center of a national debate over Cancel Culture, Big Tech, free speech, and the ability of small businesses to express their values.
And we refused to be canceled.
From a $50 Gift Card to a National Story
Your American Flag Store began with a simple idea from our six-year-old son.
With little money to invest, our family used a $50 Home Depot gift card to purchase the materials needed to build our first wooden American flag.
What started as a family project eventually became a growing business creating handcrafted rustic American flags and patriotic artwork.
Our flags weren't mass-produced in a factory.
They were designed, cut, assembled, painted, and finished by hand.
They were made to represent something.
God. Family. Country.
As our business grew, so did our collection of patriotic artwork. We created American flags honoring the military, veterans, first responders, Christianity, the Constitution, American history, and the values that millions of Americans hold dear.
Then, in January 2021, everything changed.
When Our American Flag Business Was Targeted
In early 2021, our family discovered firsthand what it meant to have a small business dependent on powerful technology platforms.
According to reporting from Fox News and The Tennessee Star, our business experienced restrictions involving Facebook advertising, Shopify products, and PayPal funds.
Fox News reported that our business had used Shopify for its online store and PayPal as its payment processor, while Facebook had restricted our ability to advertise.
The Tennessee Star later reported our account of what happened after a customer posted a photo of a custom flag featuring then-President Donald Trump and tagged our business. According to our account, our Facebook advertising disappeared, Shopify removed certain products, and PayPal withheld more than $110,000 in business revenue.
The Center for American Liberty also documented the dispute in 2021, reporting that Facebook had blocked our advertising and that Shopify had removed specific products, including a Texas flag and a flag featuring President Trump. At the time, the organization said PayPal was holding more than $35,000 in funds owed to the business.
The amount reported publicly changed as the dispute developed, but the impact on our family was the same:
Our ability to operate our business was suddenly placed in the hands of companies thousands of miles away.
We Learned What "Cancel Culture" Really Means
Before it happened to us, "Cancel Culture" could sound like a political talking point.
After it happened to our family business, it became personal.
We weren't a massive corporation.
We weren't a political organization.
We were a family making American flags.
And suddenly, our ability to advertise, sell certain products, and access money from our own customers was being affected by decisions made by enormous technology and financial companies.
Our experience became part of a much larger national conversation about Big Tech censorship, payment processor restrictions, deplatforming, debanking, and free expression.
The story didn't stay local.
It went national.
From Tennessee to National Television
Our story was featured by major national media outlets, including Fox News and Newsmax, as well as other media organizations.
Fox News featured James Staake discussing the company's experience with Facebook and PayPal.
Newsmax also reported on the controversy surrounding our business and Facebook advertising restrictions.
In 2024, NTD reported on the family's return to business after the conflict with Facebook and PayPal, describing how the company had started from a six-year-old boy's idea and a $50 Home Depot gift card before facing the financial restrictions that threatened the business.
The Tennessee Star likewise published an extensive account of our experience with Facebook, Shopify, and PayPal.
Our story was no longer simply about a flag company.
It had become a story about what can happen when a small American business finds itself dependent upon powerful private platforms.
We Chose Not to Back Down
We could have quit.
We could have stopped making controversial designs.
We could have removed the artwork that made some people uncomfortable.
We could have stopped talking.
We didn't.
Instead, we continued making the artwork we believed in.
Because we believe Americans should be able to display art that represents their beliefs, heritage, faith, service, family, and love of country.
That's what artistic expression is supposed to be.
You don't have to agree with every flag hanging on somebody else's wall.
You don't have to share the beliefs represented by every piece of patriotic artwork.
But we believe Americans should have the freedom to express themselves.
Rustic American Flags With a Purpose
Today, our handcrafted rustic American flags continue to represent the principles that inspired us from the beginning.
Every flag tells a story.
Some honor the military.
Some honor police officers, firefighters, and first responders.
Some celebrate the Constitution.
Some represent faith.
Some commemorate sacrifice.
Some are created specifically for a family.
And some simply say:
I'm proud to be an American.
Our wooden flags aren't designed to look like something that came off an assembly line.
They are handcrafted pieces of patriotic art designed to become part of your home, office, workshop, man cave, business, or family legacy.
More Than a Flag — It's a Statement
When you hang a handcrafted American flag on your wall, you're not just decorating a room.
You're telling your family what matters to you.
You're telling your children about the sacrifices that made this country possible.
You're honoring the people who served.
You're celebrating the freedoms we often take for granted.
And you're expressing yourself.
That's why we've continued to stand behind our work.
Because the American flag cannot be canceled.
