How Our Small Family Business Became National News

From a Six-Year-Old Boy's Idea and a $50 Gift Card to National Television

What started as a simple idea from our six-year-old son became a family business, a journey across America, and eventually a story that was featured by national media outlets.

This is the story of Your American Flag Store.

It is a story about family, hard work, handcrafted American flags, unexpected challenges, and the customers who stood beside us when our small business was fighting to survive.

Most importantly, it is the story of why we never gave up.

It Started With a Six-Year-Old's Idea

In 2017, our family was living in Valley Center, California.

Our six-year-old son had an idea.

He wanted to start a business making and selling American flags.

At the time, we didn't have much money to invest in a new business.

In fact, we didn't even have enough money to purchase the materials to make our first flag.

What we did have was a $50 Home Depot gift card that my wife's parents had given us for Christmas.

That $50 gift card became the starting point for Your American Flag Store.

Our family began building handcrafted wooden American flags and taking them on the road.

For nearly two years, we traveled throughout the western United States with a sales booth that we built ourselves.

We attended country music concerts, gun shows, rodeos, and other events where we could meet customers face-to-face.

And something incredible happened.

People loved our flags.

Within our first six months, our story was featured on local television by KUSI San Diego.

Our son, Max, who had originally come up with the idea, became the unexpected star of the interview.

A six-year-old boy had dreamed up a business.

And his parents decided to give the dream a chance.

From a Small Booth to an Online Business

As our business grew, we realized that traveling from event to event wasn't going to be enough.

We needed a way to reach customers across the country.

So we built an online business.

Our handcrafted wooden American flags began reaching customers far beyond Southern California.

Then 2020 changed everything.

The pandemic and lockdowns dramatically disrupted the events and shows that had been an important part of our business.

Like thousands of other small businesses, we had to adapt.

We moved our focus online.

And surprisingly, the online business began to grow.

Eventually, our family made another major decision.

We moved approximately 2,200 miles from California to Tennessee.

We bought our first home in Tennessee and believed we were finally living the American Dream we had worked so hard to achieve.

But our biggest challenge was still ahead.

When Our Sales Suddenly Stopped

In early 2021, we noticed something was wrong.

Our website traffic began falling.

Then our sales dropped dramatically.

At first, we didn't understand why.

We started investigating.

What we discovered became the beginning of a battle that would eventually put our little family business on national television.

According to our account, Facebook had suspended our ability to advertise, while Shopify removed certain flag designs from our online store.

Contemporary media reports also documented the dispute, including reports that flags involving patriotic, religious, military, first-responder, and political themes had been affected.

Our family believed the restrictions were connected to the nature of some of the products and viewpoints represented by our artwork.

The companies involved had their own policies and explanations regarding content and platform rules.

Whatever the explanation, the practical effect on our small business was devastating.

Our ability to reach customers had been severely disrupted.

And then things got even more difficult.

PayPal Froze Our Business Funds

PayPal was our payment processor.

Then funds in our business account were placed on hold.

The amount became substantial enough to threaten our ability to operate and fulfill customer orders.

A May 2021 demand letter from our attorneys documented the dispute and described PayPal's reserve hold, including the impact it had on our ability to purchase materials and fulfill orders.

The situation became especially difficult because the problems happened at the same time our business was experiencing a surge in orders following national media coverage.

According to the contemporaneous legal documentation, more than 200 new orders came in during the initial surge, creating a serious cash-flow problem because the money needed to manufacture and ship those orders was being held.

Imagine having customers who had purchased your products...

Having orders sitting in your shop...

Having employees and family members working to fulfill those orders...

But not having access to the money needed to buy the materials and ship the products.

That was the position our family found ourselves in.

Then Came the Phone Call That Changed Everything

On February 1, 2021, we were facing what felt like the possible collapse of everything we had built.

We had bills.

We had a mortgage.

We had a family to support.

And we had a business that suddenly seemed to be under enormous pressure.

We had no idea what was going to happen next.

Then, according to our family's account, we received an unexpected opportunity.

National television wanted to hear our story.

Newsmax reached out after seeing a LinkedIn post and invited James Staake to appear on Rob Schmitt Tonight.

The interview became a major turning point for the business.

The story was no longer confined to our family.

People across the country were hearing about a small family-owned company making handcrafted wooden American flags.

And they began responding.

America Started Buying Our Flags

The response from customers was overwhelming.

A contemporaneous legal filing documented a major surge in orders following the Newsmax appearance, including more than 200 new orders around that period.

People weren't simply purchasing flags.

Many customers told us they were purchasing because they wanted to support our family.

Some had never even planned to buy a flag.

They saw our story and decided to stand behind a small American business.

That support meant everything to us.

Our Story Reached More National Media

The Newsmax interview wasn't the end.

Our story continued to receive national attention.

Fox News later featured James Staake discussing the dispute involving the business and PayPal.

Fox News Digital also reported on the broader story, including Staake's account that more than $100,000 in funds had been frozen by PayPal. The article also noted that the technology companies involved denied targeting businesses based on political beliefs.

CBN News covered the story as well, reporting on the restrictions affecting the business and its religious and patriotic products.

NTD later revisited the story in 2024, reporting that more than $110,000 had been withheld by PayPal and that the business had ultimately returned to operation.

Our little family business from Tennessee had become a national story.

We Didn't Build This Business Alone

When people hear a story like ours, they sometimes focus on the companies involved.

But we remember something else.

Our customers.

They could have simply watched the news story and moved on.

Instead, many of them purchased flags.

They shared our story.

They called.

They emailed.

They prayed for our family.

They encouraged us to keep going.

And many became lifelong customers and friends.

That support helped us survive one of the most difficult periods our family had ever experienced.

Today, Your American Flag Store continues to create handcrafted American flags for customers throughout the United States.

Every flag still carries the same basic idea that started everything:

Create something that represents what America means to you.

Why We Still Make American Flags

For us, an American flag isn't simply another product.

It represents something.

For a veteran, it can represent service.

For a military family, it can represent sacrifice.

For a first responder, it can represent duty.

For a parent, it can represent the country they want their children to inherit.

For a family, it can represent the values they share.

And for many Americans, it simply represents home.

That's why we take what we do seriously.

We're not just building wooden flags.

We're building pieces of American history, family stories, and personal memories.

From a $50 Gift Card to a National Story

It's hard to believe when we look back.

A six-year-old boy had an idea.

His parents decided to give him a chance.

We had a $50 Home Depot gift card.

We built our first flags.

We built our first booth.

We traveled across the country.

We built an online store.

We moved our family to Tennessee.

We watched our business nearly collapse.

We appeared on national television.

And customers from across America stepped forward to support us.

What started as a little family business became a story that reached millions of people through national media.

But perhaps the most important part of the story isn't how big it became.

It's where it started.

A family.

A six-year-old's idea.

A $50 gift card.

And a belief that if you work hard, stay faithful, and refuse to quit, you can still build something meaningful in America.

The American Dream Is Still Alive

Our story isn't a story about having everything figured out.

It's a story about taking the next step when you don't know what comes next.

It's about building something with your own hands.

It's about believing in your family.

It's about serving your customers.

It's about getting back up when things go wrong.

And it's about remembering why you started in the first place.

Our family started with almost nothing.

Today, we have customers across America who have become part of our story.

And we're incredibly grateful.

Thank You for Supporting Our Family Business

From our family to yours—

Thank you for believing in the American Dream.

🇺🇸 God. Family. Country.
